The Columbus Crew acquired defender Grant Lillard from Inter Miami CF on Friday in exchange for a third-round pick in the 2021 MLS SuperDraft.
Lillard, 24, joined Miami after two seasons with the Chicago Fire but never appeared in a game for the expansion club. He played in 12 games (eight starts) with the Fire from 2018-19.
Lillard provides depth in central defense for the Crew after the loss of Vito Wormgoor, who had surgery on his ankle last month.
"Grant is a promising, young defender who brings MLS experience to our defensive corps," Crew president and general manager Tim Bezbatchenko said in a statement. "His addition will help strengthen our roster depth as we continue to build a team that can compete for championships."
Lillard played four seasons at Indiana University before joining the Fire. He tallied 14 goals and nine assists in 86 starts, earning Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year honors as a senior.
