The San Diego Padres continued to acquire front-line starting pitching from the trade market, landing Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Joe Musgrove on Monday in a three-team deal that also includes the New York Mets, multiple outlets reported.

The Pirates reportedly will get five players in return, four from the Padres, including top outfield prospect Hudson Head, as well as left-hander Omar Cruz. Right-handers David Bednar and Drake Fellows also are reported to be headed from San Diego to Pittsburgh.

The Pirates also will get catcher/outfielder Endy Rodriguez from the Mets.

The Mets reportedly will land left-hander Joey Lucchesi, 27, who was a 10-game winner in 2019 and has a career 4.21 ERA in 59 career appearances.

The deal for Musgrove, who had a career-best 3.86 ERA last season, is one of several trades made by the Padres in recent months in an attempt to compete in the National League West with the World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Padres advanced to the National League Division Series in 2020 but were swept by the Dodgers. It was their first postseason appearance since 2006.

The Padres' maneuvering started last season with the acquisition of Mike Clevinger from the Cleveland Indians, although his contributions were limited because of elbow issues that required Tommy John surgery.

San Diego also landed Yu Darvish from the Chicago Cubs and Blake Snell from the Tampa Bay Rays since the 2020 season ended. Darvish finished second in the National League Cy Young Award voting, while Snell was named the American League Cy Young winner in 2018.

Musgrove, 28, was the Pirates' Opening Day starter in 2020, but he was just 1-5 in eight starts despite his solid ERA and 55 strikeouts in 39 2/3 innings.

In five seasons with both the Houston Astros (2016-17) and Pirates (2018-20), Musgrove is 29-38 with a 4.33 ERA in 108 appearances (83 starts). He has 465 strikeouts in 496 2/3 innings.
